In the spring of the 2008-09 school year, the following percentages of NAZ children* were at grade level**:

34% in 4th grade reading
32% in 4th grade math
46% in 10th grade reading
19% in 11th grade math

Fourth grade was selected for the elementary check-point because it is an important transition point from early childhood into middle childhood. In high school, the grade levels shown are the only ones in which these tests are given.

* NAZ children included in this estimate are those who were enrolled in the following Minneapolis Public Schools and charter schools located in North Minneapolis that are in or close to the Zone:

**At grade level is measured by scores on the statewide Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) tests in the spring of 2009, combining those in the two upper scoring categories of “meets standards” and “exceeds standards.” If a school had fewer than 10 students with valid test scores for a given combination of grade level and subject, scores are not published and are not included in these computations.
