Happy Black History Month!

Happy Black History Month! Historian Carter G. Woodson created this month-long celebration in 1926 and later founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASAALH), which is currently the oldest historical society established for the promotion of African American history.

To kick things off, NAZ CEO and President Sondra Samuels shared her thoughts on Black History Month and the importance of lifting up and celebrating the lives of Northsiders and beyond, which includes descendants of enslaved Africans in America and Africans of the diaspora.

Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing stories of Black excellence from individuals who have made a significant impact on North Minneapolis and the world. The work of these individuals is familiar to us as we celebrate not just where we’ve been but where we’re going. The people we’re highlighting spent years battling against some of the same challenges we have and continue to fight against. It’s a long road ahead to racial equity and demonstrable inclusion but with our families, partners and community, we’re confident we’ll get there together.
